I only feel a little creepy walking into estate sales, running straight to the sewing room and walking out with bags of old sewing supplies. They're just downsizing, after all.
Mostly, I just feel excited. To carry on the sewing legacy.
To read about sewing draperies.
And to wonder what those two tools on the left are for.
I passed up another sewing machine. A 1947 Singer, fully loaded. $250. Ouch.
Remember when thread was 15 cents a spool? Nope, me neither.

How much? About $6 for the whole lot.

Score.

I hunt for estate sales just for this reason. I got 2 giant boxes of fabric for 10 bucks a while back. I love estate sales, I have noticed I always find the best cardigans there too.
ReplyDeleteThe third thing from the left is a crochet hook. A very fine one.
ReplyDeleteI love this!! It makes me want to start going to estate sales again! Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteReminds me of my mother-in-law's sewing room. I grabbed a bunch of stuff like this when she passed away.
ReplyDeleteAnd the tools are for cleaning lint out of your sewing machine....
The tool on the very far right is for copying patterns. You would use tracing paper and carbon copy like stuff and you would trace the lines with that tool and it would "copy" the blue carbon copy stuff onto the paper below. I remember seeing my mom do it when I was much younger :)
ReplyDeleteAh that all looks lovely...
ReplyDeleteI wish I lived in an area that has sales like that. Just need to keep an eye on the charity shops here...
As the above commenter said, I think those tools are for cleaning your machine. My mom has those from her old machines, and my contemporary model machine came with a small brush similar to the one second from the left.
ReplyDeleteGreat haul! I never seem to hit the jackpot anywhere. Must keep looking
Score! :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, the tool with the spiky roller may have been used in patternmaking/marking once upon a time. I have one similar that still has the box that was used for that!
ReplyDeletemmmm...lovely. ;)
ReplyDeletegreat score!!
ReplyDeleteI'm already addicted to Goodwill. Now you're making me want to try estate sales!
ReplyDeleteOh, that's so awesome...
ReplyDeletewow! love them all! I also have lots of vintage sewing supplies from my lovely grandmother! i am so thankful for all these cuties! :-D
ReplyDeleteamazing finds! I think i need to start visiting some estate sales.
ReplyDeleteWhen my MIL moved I helped her clean out her sewing room and came home with a 5 gallon bucket filled with thread! She used to do sewing in her home for people. I ended up with her sewing stuff, and some of her moms. Oh, those two items... yeah, for cleaning the dusties and lint outta the machine! I use a tooth brush and q-tips to clean mine in between tune ups! Those trims are wonderful! I had a batch of them too.
ReplyDeleteJealous! You did well! Have fun!
ReplyDeleteLOL, no need to feel creepy, I would be doing that too! In fact, I "may" just do that whenever I walk into a thrift store...
ReplyDeleteSWEET -- I have those two Singer booklets, they belonged to my Mother. Great finds!
ReplyDeleteI use my cleaning brush almost daily!
ReplyDeleteYour post made me try again to find estate sales in Australia. I'm not sure if they are a closely guarded secret, or something that doesn't happen here very much. The thrifting and antiques in the USA is so much better, I think Australians went through a 'backyard incinerator' phase in the 60's and burned all the 'out of date' stuff. It's such a shame! If anyone knows about estate sale in oz, let me know! I love finding vintage sewing supplies! Such treasures x
ReplyDeleteWhat great finds! I love it when I walk out of an estate sale with such great vintage sewing supplies!
ReplyDeleteSome awesome finds there! Nice work :D You are going to have so much fun sewing with them huh? :D
ReplyDeleteI just bought 3 tomato pin cushions at an estate sale last week. LOVE THEM.
ReplyDeletewill the stuff that we buy new now be Vintage in 50 yrs? hmmmmm I doubt it. sad
